This piece is a part of the curated jewelry collection selected by our founder for the way they remind her of objects in the Museum’s Louis Comfort Tiffany holdings — including the festooned, pearl‑like ornamentation of a signed LCT Favrile glass cordial glass and an ink well repurposed as a lighter from the "Abalone" Tiffany Studios desk set. Louis C. Tiffany (1848–1933)—a Mayflower descendant, artist, entrepreneur, innovator, and inventor—helped define, together with the talented artists and designers he employed, the naturalistic aesthetic that became synonymous with American Art Nouveau and earned international acclaim. Swipe to see the Museum's Louis C. Tiffany objects that inspired these selections, both over 100 years old.
This particular fan-shaped design also recalls an oil painting in the Museum’s holdings signed S. Kendall and attributed to artist William Sergeant Kendall (1869–1938), after Belgian painter Gustave Léonard de Jonghe (1829–1893) and his circa 1865 composition, The Japanese Fan. The Museum’s painting is estimated to date to circa 1888–1892, during the period Kendall studied and worked in France. Although research has not confirmed Kendall as a Mayflower descendant, his connection to the Museum is through fellow artist and Mayflower descendant Walter Gay (1856–1937). Learn more in the Museum.
