The “Follow the Invisible Thread” tote reflects the foundation of inquiry that led to the creation of the Museum and the way its stories are discovered. Our founder created the Museum using what she calls the Invisible Thread Process—a research approach she coined to describe the invisible thinking that happens from one clue to the next and leads to discoveries, histories, and truth. The questions, the “I wonders,” and the curiosity that connect one clue to another form the invisible thread. Using this process, an American tapestry of interwoven histories has emerged. More than a Museum motto, “Follow the Invisible Thread” is a compass for finding history—and truth.

Our Magnifying Glass-Over 100 Years Old-Swipe to View

The magnifying glass that inspired the design pictured has its own story. It is inspired by a circa 1910 Tiffany Studios magnifying glass in the “Ninth Century” desk-set pattern, selected from roughly twenty Tiffany Studios desk-set patterns because its interwoven ornament evokes threads as they might appear beneath a magnifying glass—an especially fitting symbol for the Museum. Tiffany Studios was founded by Mayflower descendant Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933), whose work is represented throughout the Museum’s holdings. Care instructions
- Remove all items from the bag before cleaning. Suggested to pretreat visible stains with stain remover. Mix warm water with laundry detergent and clean the bag with terry washcloth or a soft bristle brush. Let the bag air dry.
