About Louis C. Tiffany

Louis C. Tiffany (1848–1933)—a Mayflower descendant, artist, entrepreneur, innovator, and inventor—helped define, together with the talented artists and designers he employed, the naturalistic aesthetic that became synonymous with American Art Nouveau and earned international acclaim. France, one of the principal centers in the emergence of the Art Nouveau movement, formally recognized Tiffany’s artistic contributions by naming him a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, the nation’s highest order of merit. His artistic achievements were also recognized in the United States, where he was elected a National Academician, the highest level of membership in the National Academy of Design.
